Path to LPCC Licensure in New Mexico
Earn a Qualifying Graduate Degree
The first step toward licensure is completing a master’s or doctoral degree in counseling or a related mental health field from an accredited institution. The degree must include coursework that meets the requirements established by the New Mexico Counseling and Therapy Practice Board.
Obtain the LMHC License
After graduating, individuals apply to the board for licensure as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). This license allows counselors to practice in an applied counseling setting while completing the supervised clinical experience required for independent licensure.
Complete Supervised Clinical Experience
LMHC licensees must complete 3,000 hours of supervised clinical counseling experience, including required face-to-face supervision with an approved clinical supervisor designated by the board.
During this stage, supervisees develop clinical competence, refine counseling techniques, and demonstrate ethical and professional practice.
Apply for LPCC Licensure
Once the required supervised experience is completed, counselors may apply to become a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC).
This credential allows clinicians to practice independently, including the ability to diagnose, treat, and operate private practice settings in New Mexico.
